Gardens named in recognition of Industrialist, inventor and author, Alfred Fryer (ca.1831 - 1892) Head of Fryer, Benson, Forster & Co and Manlove, Alliott, Fryer & Co. Frier rescued the remains of Fulshaw Cross, which remains in place nearby.
